Pit Fighter, 2005
Pit Fighter is a 2005 American low-budget action thriller
written and directed by Jesse V. Johnson. Set in the violent
world of illegal cage fighting in southern Mexico, the film
follows Jack Severino, a man suffering from amnesia who
earns a living as an unstoppable fighter in deadly
underground "pit fights." The lead role is played by Dominique
Vandenberg, a former soldier and stuntman, who convincingly
portrays the physically imposing but emotionally distant Jack.
Steven Bauer co-stars as Manolo, Jack’s manager and business
partner, while Stana Katic appears as Marianne, Jack’s love
interest.
The film marks an early collaboration between director Jesse
V. Johnson and Scott Adkins, who plays a minor role as
Nathan, a figure from Jack’s past. Although Adkins doesn’t
have any major fight scenes in this film and his role is limited,
Pit Fighter is notable as the first time he worked with Johnson.
Their creative partnership would later lead to several
acclaimed action films such as Savage Dog (2017), Accident
Man (2018), Avengement (2019), and Debt Collectors (2020).
Pit Fighter was released direct-to-DVD and received mostly
negative reviews. While the film was praised for its gritty
atmosphere and Vandenberg’s physical performance, it was
criticized for its weak plot, clichéd dialogue, and poorly
executed action direction.
